Heralded as "the area's most innovative new opera organization" (Buffalo Spree, Best of WNY 2025), Sotto Voce, Buffalo's newest opera company, will stage Pietro Mascagni’s one‑act verismo classic CAVALLERIA RUSTICANA (Rustic Chivalry). This  timeless tale of passion, betrayal, and heartbreak will be brought to life by Sotto Voce’s signature expressive singing and innovative staging – including a set evoking a Sicilian village on Easter morning. The production will feature both local and national talent and showcase the power of bel canto vocal technique.  Audiences will also experience two original short films accompanying the Overture and Intermezzo, which will enrich the audience’s understanding of the characters’ emotions and deepen the emotional resonance of Mascagni’s score.  This production marks Sotto Voce’s second collaboration with members of the Avanti orchestra, conducted by Mason Cancilla.

Tea Leaves

Beyond gold, jewels, land, and raw materials, few commodities have shaped the development of society as profoundly as tea. From the dowry of a Portuguese princess to the sparks of the Boston Tea Party, tea has influenced histories and cultures across the globe. Yet, its significance within Black diasporic cultures often remains untold. Tea Leaves embarks on a musical journey, tracing the legacy of tea through the sounds of Nigeria, Brazil, Jamaica, the American South, and beyond. This song cycle poetically examines tea’s role as a commodity, its accompanying rituals, and its enduring influence on the lives of Black communities. Through its melodies and verses, Tea Leaves invites listeners to steep in a deeper understanding of how this humble brew sustained and shaped generations within the context of their struggles, joys, and everyday lives.

She Who Dared

Everyone has heard of Rosa Parks, but she wasn’t the first to refuse to move. She Who Dared celebrates the women whose courageous resistance in Montgomery, Alabama ignited a movement and led to the historic Supreme Court ruling in Browder v. Gayle, which declared bus segregation unconstitutional and transformed their acts of defiance into a decisive legal victory for equality and justice. While often riotous and sometimes hilarious, She Who Dared vividly brings to life how everyday people have the power to challenge the systems around them and affect tangible change—if only they dare.

Little Women

Mark Adamo’s operatic adaptation of Little Women brings Louisa May Alcott’s classic coming-of-age novel to life in a fresh and powerful way. First commissioned by Houston Grand Opera in 1998 and hailed as a “masterpiece” by John Rockwell in the New York Times for its New York City Opera premiere in 2003, this American opera has become one of the most frequently performed contemporary pieces, celebrated for its emotional depth and resonant themes of family, sisterhood, growing up, and coming home.

Composer Adamo, who also wrote the libretto, blends lyrical melodies with contemporary musical textures to vividly realize each beloved character, while capturing the internal conflict of iconic central character, Jo March, who fears that growing up inevitably means growing apart from her family and her sisters, Meg, Beth and Amy.
